Depending on who you talk to the downtown area of Brownsville is either a lost cause or on the upswing. And there are the workers. Since , Rutledge has been selling simple, delicious little burgers. For a little extra you can get a can of soda and a bag of chips. The business has seen the downward spiral of downtown. The crime in itself has always been there. It has been reduced as much as it can be reduced, I guess but it takes community involvement.
Mayor Martinez agrees, money is a tremendous obstacle. Even he would like to see the funding move at a faster pace. With that challenge comes the need to change the negative public perception and improve police patrol for people to feel safe.
