Hi, i booked a trip to Luxor next week and am going alone and i wondered if anyone had experience or suggestions on having a great time without any problems, having read feedback after booking the trip most people have said not the best place to go alone. I am booked all inclusive but i want to venture outside of the hotel and go on many of the trips i have heard about is there a good safe way to do it? Any suggestions good or bad would be much appriciated. I am staying at the Iberotel, it seems to have mixed reviews i guess its just down to personal preference it looks ok to me and with all the trips which sound amazing it doesnt look like i'll be there that much.
Sam as long as my room is clean I am happy! I am sure you will have an amazing adventure and holiday. I envy you! You will be fine, but just know there is a big sex tourism business in Luxor. Specifically, young Egyptian men are seeking foreign women. I travelled with a female friend and we had lots of attention by young males in both Luxor and Hurghada.
I think you will be OK, just be alert to the men who want to take you for coffee "to practice thier English". I just returned from a trip with my husband and another couple. We spent a little more than 2 days in Luxor. My husband and I walked around at night and got the basic, constant requests to buy something. Keeping in mind that for many this is their livelihood helps keep the right perspective.
However, I did want to comment on dress, as a woman. We were traveling with a friend who is from Egypt and was returning to visit family, so he gave me a lot of advice on clothing. Try to wear shirts that are cut as high at the neck as possible, and if possible, cover your shoulders. That being said, men will stare, in a way you have probably not seen before, with great constancy.
They did this even while I was with my husband. So, just ignore it and walk on. It is the one thing that would put me off going back to Luxor - we did not get this kind of treatment in Cairo or Sharm on previous visits to Egypt. And just in case you're wondering - I'm 40, so not a young lass who might not see the harm! I hope Pudding has had none of the problems of which so many of you ladies are complaining.
